                                                          June 2008

Dear Friends,

As you will know, we have for some months now been discussing the possibility of a Union between the 2 Churches of Coatbridge: Clifton and Coatbridge: St Andrew’s. We are happy to now tell you that after a lot of talking and prayer we are finally in a position to give you the details of the proposed Basis of Union. The Basis of Union is the legal document which sets out the terms under which the union will take place. Please be assured that these decisions have not been entered into lightly, or without a great deal of time thought and discussion.  Both Kirk Sessions have agreed to the terms of the Basis of Union.

The Basis of Union was received at the meeting of Presbytery on 17th June 2008 and we will now be proceeding to a vote on the terms of that Basis of Union on Sunday 31st August after morning worship. The vote will take place in both Churches at the same time and will be overseen by Presbytery

So anyway what are the main points of the Basis of Union

 -  name of Congregation to be New St Andrew’s Parish Church

-   all property and funds of the 2 congregations will  belong to the United congregation

-   the building to be used for worship will be the St Andrew’s Church Buildings

-   the Parish will consist of the 2 existing parish areas

-   the 2 existing Kirk Sessions will join to become one Kirk Session

-   temporal affairs will be managed by the Congregational Board

-   minister will be Revd Fiona Nicolson

-   manse will be the existing St Andrew’s Church Manse

We hope that this will help you to understand the current position. Please give the details your consideration.  If you wish to see a copy of the full document then please speak to the Session Clerks or Minister/ Interim Moderator, and of course if you have concerns which you wish to discuss please do talk to us. Hopefully now that you have the finalised details you can start to think about what is the best way forward.  We hope that you will all try to be at the joint services over the summer and that you will make an extra special effort to attend on the day of the vote.

Both Kirk Sessions, the Minister and Interim Moderator are aware that this is not an easy situation and that there will inevitably be sadness for many of you. It is our hope and prayer that we can all help one another and move forward together.

Please be assured of our prayers

With all best wishes

Rev Fiona Nicolson                                        Revd George Donaldson

Minister                                                        Interim Moderator

 THURSDAY CLUB

The Club held it’s Summer Outing to St Andrews on Thursday 22nd May 2008.  Morning Coffee was arranged at the Kirkwood Hotel in Burntisland and Tea was served at the Scores Hotel, which was enjoyed by everyone.  The weather was also kind to us and an enjoyable day ended when we returned to Coatbridge in the evening.  A raffle was held on the coach and the sum of £56 was raised for Christian Aid.  Thanks to all who donated prizes and who bought tickets.  NS

6TH COATBRIDGE GIRLS’ BRIGADE

We recently ended our session with display/prize giving on Tuesday 13th May 2008.    First of all I would like to thank everyone who attended and gave us their support.  Thanks also go to Fiona as G.B. Chaplain and to Heather Mcwhinnie, Division Commissioner for being Inspecting Officer and for presenting the prizes.     The girls enjoyed their evening and we hope to see them all at the start of the next session.  Thanks to all the officers and helpers for their continued support.

The BOYS’ BRIGADE

The Juniors and Company Section enjoyed an activity day at Fordell Firs, where they took part in Archery, Low Ropes, Caving and Gladiators. The Anchor Boys also had their Fun Day in St Pats primary, where the boys enjoyed activities from football to the bouncy castle.

We held our parents night on Friday 9th May. Many thanks to all parents, relatives and friends of the company who took the time to come along and support us. I would especially like to thank Fiona for her continued support and to Gordon Austin, the Battalion secretary, who was our inspecting officer. I would also like to thank all the ladies in the background who supplied us with the tea.

Main awards this year were

Captains medal Ross Bough

Best Recruit Junior Section Nathan Love

Best Recruit Company Section Daniel Glendinning

Best Boy Junior Section Ross LLewellyn

Best Boy Company Section Adam Llewellyn

In addition to this we presented three Presidents Badges to William Armour, Steven Murray and Andrew Mathieson and Queens Badges to Lyle Scougall and John Armour.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the boys in all three sections for all their efforts this year.

We also presented service badges to some of our officers - Yvonne Elliot and John Scougall received their ten year service badges. Lorna Whiteside has served for 18years and Alan Walker 19 years. Without the dedication of all the officers we would not have the successful company we have in our church. All our officers are willing to help out in all sections which does not happen in all companies. I would like to note my thanks to all the officers and helpers in the company. We could still do with more help please.

One of our helpers Ashley Rae is going to Zambia as a volunteer to help rebuild a school as part of a group from Airdrie Academy. We donated our offering from the parents night to this worthy cause.

Finally, I would like to thank all those responsible for the gift to celebrate my twenty years as a captain. I always said a captain had a life span of Ten years then it was time for a change. Unfortunately, I have lost the ability to count and I am already looking forward to the challenge of a new session. See you in August.                                                                            Jim Elliott, Captain
