June 2005

Dear Friends in St Andrew’s,

Well, there you have it – a sole nominee called Fiona Nicolson; and called to be your new minister.  I’m sure that this summer will be a busy time for so many of you as you get ready to welcome her into your midst.

There’s an induction to organise – sometime in August probably; a manse to get ready – as soon as possible; suitable words and actions to think about – so that Fiona gets a good impression of Coatbridge and St.Andrew’s folk.  For Fiona the process will be somewhat different if no less hectic – folk to take leave of who have been close to her these past nine or so years in Dunfermline; matters to be finalised and settled before she travels West to Coatbridge; how to go about the fresh start that she and you will be to each other.

Two parties with so much to think on and so much to do.  Fiona will be laying down so much of what was important in her last nine plus years.  Though she will always carry what she has learnt, St. Andrew’s will give to her what they found to be important from Ian Wotherspoon’s ministry, AND there must be a third ingredient if any recipe is to succeed.

An openness to the new and to the challenging; a willingness to venture beyond our comfort zones.  When I was first a minister in Coatbridge there were 14 Church of Scotland parishes in the town.  There are now 7.  There will soon only be 5! Why? Because the world has changed – but we haven’t; people’s perceptions of who they are and the place of the Gospel in their lives has moved on – but we haven’t.  I could go on at this point but won’t.  Just to say that we have operated within our comfort zones and everything else around us has gone leaving us in danger of being left behind.

In Fiona Nicolson St Andrew’s have chosen a future.  Pick up the challenge that a new ministry will bring.  Ian steadied the ship after Union, now cast off on the uncertain and often stormy voyage that being a twenty-first century church can be.  As someone once said, “A ship in harbour is safe …. But a ship was meant to sail!”.

Enjoy your voyage!       Bill McKaig: Interim Moderator.

Summer Services

This year it is our intention to revert to a practice, which was commonplace a number of years ago of holding joint services with a neighbouring congregation for all or part of the summer.

During the month of July we will worship with Clifton Parish Church.   On the first two Sundays of the month (i.e. 3rd and 10th) services will be held in St Andrew’s and for the rest of the month (i.e. 17th, 24th and 31st) services will be held at Clifton.

Time of Service.    11 a.m. as usual.   Tea/coffee will be available after the Service.

Offering.   Suitably marked collection plates will be at the church door as we enter and will be brought forward during the Service.   Office-bearers on duty should note that the teams are reduced and it is still imperative that a substitute is arranged if you are unable to be present.   Arrangements will be made on the 17/24/31 July to bring the collection back to St. Andrew’s for counting.

The Summer Club.   The Club will operate throughout the month – further information from George McCall.

The Choir   A joint choir will take part in all Services.

If you foresee any problems please contact the Session Clerk

SUNDAY SCHOOL

The Sunday School will finish for the summer on the 26th June and will restart on the 28th August.

AUCTION/SILENT AUCTION

It seems a long time since our Auction but we are still taking items to various Auction Houses etc. and the total has now reached £1975.   Many people are due thanks for what turned out to be a very successful day and indeed week.   You, the congregation, i.e. the donors and buyers played your part so well that at one stage we thought that we were going to be swamped.   Those who helped by uplifting items, the café organisers and staff, those who washed, cleaned and polished the goods to make them as saleable as possible.   The labourers, door keepers (i.e. the welcomers), treasury staff, auctioneer and helpers, the new people (I hope you enjoyed this very sociable occasion and that you come back for more – we need you).   The many people who prepared the hall and many of the same people who did the tidying up at the end.    All these and more are due a big thanks for a job well done.

I’m sure that I’ll have missed lots of people but to all those who feel they’ve been left out please accept my apologies and the thanks of myself and that of the ad hoc committee who all enjoyed being part of this successful function.

When can we go again?
