OUTLOOK – AUGUST 2004

Dear Friends in St Andrew’s,

Suppose you had a bank account which had £86,000 in it!  At the end of each day the account is wiped out and the cash which was not withdrawn disappears?! BUT at the beginning of a new day £86,000 is put into the account again.  What would you do? How would you feel?

Well, you’d spend it of course.  You’d make sure every day that every pound was withdrawn and well spent – no way is there any chance of money being wiped off your account!

You and I have an account exactly like that one.  Only we call it time.  Every day we are credited with 86,000 seconds.  Every night the account is emptied – lost – wasted if you didn’t use the account to any good purpose.  Day after day the same thing happens – use the account or lose it.  It’s wise to use the account well every day for we never know when we will lose it.

Are we investing in things that will last?

The good news for you is that Ian Wotherspoon is back with you and the three months or so until his retirement can be both a celebratory and thanksgiving time.

Enjoy the summer – and spend each 86,000 account well!

Yours sincerely,

Bill McKaig: Interim Moderator

TRIBUTE TO LINDA IMRIE

Linda Imrie, one of our younger elders, passed away peacefully after a long illness, at her home at 16 Cherry Grove, Drumpellier Lawns, just after midnight on Monday 31st May.

This for Linda was the end of a valiant struggle which she waged against cancer for over ten years.  In that she survived for this length of time with an illness which was unrelenting is a tribute to her courage and her faith, it speaks also of the skill of the medical staff and the unfailing care, love and support of her near and dear ones.

Linda was ordained to the eldership in Gartsherrie Church in 1987, following in the footsteps of her father, who until his death was Session Clerk of Gartsherrie.  Ordained with her husband George, Linda carried out her duties over the years with faithful dedication, latterly illness of course prevented her full participation, but her interest in our congregation and its fortunes never failed.

Linda worked with Ernst and Young Accountants.  It was a measure of the respect and affection in which she was held there that she received good wishes and support on a regular and frequent bases from members of that firm at every level, right up to the end of her days.

To speak of all these things, important though they may be does not even begin to reflect the qualities which we who knew her remember today as we pay tribute to Linda.  In remembering Linda we give thanks for the very special way in which Linda lived out her faith.  She was uniquely compassionate, with a great capacity to think of other people no matter how weak or distressed she may have been.  Her own illness was something she seemed to forget as she showed a limitless concern for others.

This compassion which lies a the heart of our faith enabled her to make long and lasting friendships which were richly apparent as we gathered for her funeral  on 3rd June.  There was about Linda a warmth which showed itself in the smile which never seemed to vanish even on the darkest days, this was part of the courage of faith which made her very special.

Today our prayers go out to her husband George, to her mother Nina and to all her family.  We pray that the faith which was so evident in her life may now be their comfort and their hope.

The sum collected at Linda’s funeral service was £1,034 and was divided equally

between Beatson Oncology Centre and McMillan Nurses.

BUPA GREAT  NORTH RUN

On Sunday 26 September 2004 I am going to run 13.1 miles for the Charity ‘Get Kids Going’.  This Charity, whose President is Lord Sebastian Coe and Vice Prisident is Tanni Grey-Thompson OBE, aims to raise cash to buy wheelchairs and special trikes for disabled children, so that they can have the same enjoyment from sport as the able bodied.  Running 13.1 miles will not be easy, but the great incentive will be the amount of money I will be able to contribute to this great cause.  I will have sponsor sheets at the Church from now until 26 September, and will also leave a sheet in the hall with George McCall if you miss me.  Any donations will be gratefully accepted.  Sam Finnigan
