Dear Friends
In just over a year from now we will be
‘downsizing’ as the modern word has it, moving from a seven apartment manse to
a much smaller house in Cupar in Fife.
Already our children are staking claim to the
redundant bits and pieces. That is nice
because most of it has been around for a very long time, part of our lives and
theirs and some of it has a story, usually about Dad being carried away in the
heat of the moment at an auction or Jumble Sale. It is nice for us to think that these things will continue to be
used and loved.
The more precious a thing is to us the more
important it is to make sure that it will continue to give pleasure and to be
treasured.
If you look at the Parish Register in this edition
of Outlook you will see that quite a number of weddings and baptisms have taken
place in our church over the last two months.
I see both weddings and baptisms as part of this
giving and receiving of a precious gift.
From the church’s side, a wedding is a team
effort, Margaret Ferguson,
David Goldie and Stewart Alston join with me to
make sure that the day is as special and perfect for the bride and groom as we
can make it. This is the gift of our
church to the couple and to their guests.
Of course we hope there is
another level of gift and that is that they feel that faith, the church, and
God’s love in Christ has an important part in this special day and in their
ongoing relationship.
There is another gift which we should
remember. The couple have given the
church a gift (not the fee which is designed to cover our costs) the gift they give is allowing the church to
play its part, allowing the words of faith to be used, not juist for them but
for their guests too.
In baptism the same ideas of gift given and
received apply, for us this has so often resulted in a child in our Sunday
School and parents in the pew.
I believe that being a Parish Church is about
offering these and other gifts freely and joyfully, and receiving the very
special goift of being part of some of the most moving and important occasions
in life with appreciation and sensitivity
.
With best wishes
Yours sincerely,
Ian G. Wotherspoon
