Dear Friends,

The beginning of last month saw an important milestone in our history as we celebrated the tenth anniversary of our congregation.  We began the celebrations with a gathering in the Church Hall on Saturday 1st March when about 120 sat down for a very enjoyable buffet meal.  The programme began with a welcome from Alex McKee our Session Clerk, followed by a toast to St Andrew’s Church from Matt Sprott our Clerk to the Board, then Rosemary cut the birthday cake (with a little help from me!) our Depute Clerk, Dorothy Dunlop then said grace.  After the meal our very able chairman, Hugh Thomson took over inviting both Tom Clark our MP, and me to speak.  The choir sang among other things, song which Joan Hamilton had composed for the occasion, Pat Price sang the Jelly Piece Song, Liz McKee sang Memory and Moira Kyle and Joan Hamilton gave suitable and funny readings. Hugh McKee one of our joint treasurers gave the vote of thanks.  To end the evening we sang a hymn for St Andrew’s to the tune Highland Cathedral which we were to sing again the following day.  The communion service was marked by the Sunday School children lighting the candles on a birthday cake and singing ‘Happy Birthday’ and the choir sang the anthem ‘Majesty’.

While that narrative describes briefly what happened it could not catch the fun, laughter, emotions and harmony which we all enjoyed.  My hope is that the next ten years will be even better!

Easter is just round the corner and the following Holy Week services will take place:- Easter Encounter at Townhead each evening at 7.30 p.m.  A united communion service in Middle Church on Thursday  at 7.30 p.m.(there will be a service in Calder at 7.00 p.m. on that day) and a Good Friday Service in our Church at 7.30p.m.

Wishing you all a happy Easter

Yours sincerely

Ian G. Wotherspoon

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

The usual Whist and Beetle drive was held on Saturday 5th April.  This was the last for the current season and we hope to resume these enjoyable nights in the winter, commencing with the first Saturday in October.  Thank you to all our friends for their support.

INDOOR BOWLING

In the match against the Bellshill churches we had a really good victory and the cup is now safely back with us.  Well done to all the players.  There will be a return match later in the year.

Our own church game is on Saturday 12th April and arrangements are now well inn hand.  After that, the indoor activities will have a break, and we wish all a pleasant and enjoyable summer.

Mrs J FERGUSON – SOCIAL CONVENER

THE GUILD

Our Guild opened the year on the 2nd October with the Carluke singers giving us a nostalgic evening of ‘Old Time Music Hall’ which turned out to be a good start to a busy and entertaining session.

During the year we had a variety of speakers on energy, Radio Heartbeat at the Monklands Hospital, a visit to Kenya, a demonstration on how to make an attractive parcel, and our own Committee entertained us at Christmas time.  After our Christmas break Fiona Marwick showed slides of her trips to India and Egypt, this was followed by a ‘Make Up’ demonstration.  Pat Price entertained the Guild to a French evening ‘Café Chantante’ assisted by the other Guild Elder, George McCall, then there was a talk on Bothwell Castle and finally the A.G.M. at which the Minister spoke on the Guild Theme.

Over the session we had two very successful fund raising events, our Coffee Morning which raised £309 and our Closing Social with Alistair McDonald which cleared £470.

Forthcoming dates: The Committee will meet in the Memorial Chapel on 7th May at 7.30 p.m. to plan next session’s syllabus.  There will be a cup of tea in the Small Hall on 14th May at 7.30 p.m. for members to choose their menu and pay for the Guild Trip which is to Ayr on 10th June.  There are still seats available and if anyone else would like to go they should contact Senga Weir Tel 435354

Mrs SENGA WEIR

SUNDAY SCHOOL

The Sunday School are collecting old mobile phones and printer cartridges and sending them to help fundraise for CHAS.  If you have any lying about at home no longer in use please pass them to any teacher.

The Sunday School trip this year will be going to Leven on Saturday 31 May, leaving the hall at 10am and returning about 7.30pm.  The price of the ticket is £8 for adults and £3 for children not in the Sunday School.  As usual our Sunday School children go free of charge.  Anyone wishing to go (there are a few seats still vacant) should contact any Sunday School teacher as soon as possible. All members and friends of the congregation, with or without children, will be very welcome.  All tickets should be paid by 4th May.  George McCall
